If you’re anything like me — and I think most creative types are — your motivation waxes and wanes from day to day. Some days the ideas come at me so fast that I can’t keep up, while other days I don’t even want to touch a camera, let alone produce something interesting with it.
Creative expression takes a lot of energy. Part of what it takes to become successful is the ability to find that energy, no matter what side of the bed you happen to wake up on any given day. I don’t care who you are, if you postpone a shoot because you’re “just not feeling it” that day, that client probably won’t be looking for you the next time they need a photographer, and won’t be passing your name on to others. So what can you do to tough it out and make some magic happen? Well…

In our second installment, the dancing zebra here provided a different kind of motion that I wanted to bring out in my processing. It’s non-linear, spontaneous, liquid… I went a little over the top to get what I wanted, but I like the result, and I’d love to hear what you think! Be sure to click through for the second pic.

Every year I fall in love with this city all over again. I love the parade, and all the craziness that goes with it! Last year I had a press pass, and spent the whole parade taking photos from the middle of the street. I got some great shots (far better than anything I got this year) but it was a lot of work, limiting my ability to just enjoy the show. So this year, I decided to be part of the crowd– squished on the sidewalk with a pretty bad view. But it was fun!
As a result, I didn’t take too many photos. On the plus side, that means I could spend more time processing the handful of photos I did take! I was using Photoshop long before I was taking pictures, so I love when I can go back to my roots like this– going beyond the photograph, and into the art… The result this time around turned into an experiment with motion…

Fremont celebrates the summer solstice in its usual fashion this weekend– with the annual Fremont Solstice Festival and Parade! The parade ends at Gasworks Park, and a few thousand of its spectators follow to hang out on the hill and enjoy the sun. From the top of the hill I shot this panoramic on a whim. No test shots, no careful framing. Just quick and simple. I think it says a lot

Took some fun shots at the sky on a stroll around Lake Union recently. Gotta love the seaplanes

While shooting some headshots for a friend recently, I snapped a couple fun shots of her dog too! Funny thing about little dogs… They don’t stop moving! In two minutes, I took more shots of this dog than I did in the entire portrait session. The focus is off in probably 80% of them. And in half of the rest, the composition is off. That’s what I get for shooting with such a tight crop and shallow depth of field.
Lots of fun though! I’d love to shoot some more pets!
